CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Feeling much better for getting some rest and munching on some snacks left out on the dining table, I contemplated the best course of action from here. Ben had assured me that he would come to me if there was any new information that could lead me to an item. Neritas was lounging nearby and charging some items I had activated previously, and Flick was practicing.

Somewhere, Alitas was teaching Capricia, Jace, and others to do what we’d thought only red dragons could.

“How did Capricia take it?” I asked Neritas.

“She wasn’t surprised there were secrets. Acted as if it made her right about everything all along. But after some talking it over, she agreed to keep the skill to herself for now. Understood that now is a really bad time to cause a panic among our people. She’ll want them all told fairly soon, though.”

It wasn’t surprising news, but I hoped that we would have time to tell them ourselves. Capricia was an unpredictable dragon who would happily leak the information if she thought I wasn’t going to do so when she thought I should.

I’d known that when Flick suggested her name, however, and I put it out of mind for now. It was more important that we trained our army for battle than that I worried what the dragon population might think of us keeping a secret we’d discovered by accident along the way.

With that pushed aside, it gave me some free time to train and work myself. I activated more metal and worked on a few pieces of armor for Neritas, wanting him to have the first few parts of a full suit like I did. Flick would follow, and then whoever was leading units into battle after that. I didn’t do all the armor but turned my attention to more weapons and shields instead.

While I worked, Griffin arrived. He gave me a brief overview of everything in the city and how the elders were handling odd disputes in the dragon world here and there. Some cities in other countries were being met with more suspicion and less friendliness than others, and they were having to walk interesting political lines. No one had dared to attack us yet, though, and for that I was grateful.

After Griffin had updated me on the day-to-day stuff, he brought my attention to the subject of recruits for a dragon army or militia to defend each city. Since the city by Phoenix had been attacked, more of them had volunteered, including some from the devastated city.

It still wasn’t that many, though. More of the messages from them were asking for protection and making excuses. Griffin told me with an apologetic tone that they were still coming from a place of fear and not support for the cities around them.

I could have throttled them all. This wasn’t what I had hoped for my people. We were powerful and needed to work together if we were going to have any chance to defeat this demon.

“What
